Imagine this: You’ve got one hour to pack for your dream vacation, and all you can take with you is a carry on – what do you toss in your bag? I can tell you one item that would definitely be in mine, whether I’m headed to Iceland’s hot springs or a beach in Bali. Activated charcoal.

Activated charcoal is basically the Swiss Army knife of natural living – one bottle serves as first aid, a portable spa treatment, and tooth whitener. And those are just a few of it’s uses. (Coconut oil, honey and apple cider are also multi-purpose. We’ll cover them in another post!)

What is activated charcoal?

This is not the stuff you throw in your BBQ grill to make dijon rosemary marinaded shish kabobs. Activated charcoal is made by burning natural materials – sometimes hardwood or coconut shells – until they transform into a highly adsorbent powder or granules. Now, you know what ABsorption is – when fluid is dissolved into a liquid or solid, like water being absorbed by a paper towel.

ADsorption is a little different – think of it more like a magnet binds strongly to the surface certain substances, grabbing onto them so they can’t get away.

Now imagine that magnet had millions of micropores that made it able to grab on to a lot of stuff, including certain types of bacteria, heavy metals, viruses, poisons and other substances . . . that’s activated charcoal.

Just two grams (about 4 capsules of coconut-derived activated charcoal) has a larger surface area than an entire football field. (Dillon et al.)

So what’s it useful for? Great question!

8 Ways To Use Activated Charcoal

Before we dive in, I want to say that “Best Boo-Boo Kisser South Of Puckett’s Gas Station” is about as official as things get for me professionally. I am not a doctor, this is not medical advice, these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA and are not meant to diagnose, treat, or cure any disease, and your medical decisions are completely up to you. If you need some convincing on this, read my full disclaimer where I say it over and over again. Also, it’s a good idea to discuss any home remedies you consider with your healthcare provider. Okay, moving on!

1. Food Poisoning & Stomach Bug Recovery

Activated charcoal is so good at binding with toxins that it’s often used in hospital emergency rooms for poisoning. According to WebMD,

Activated charcoal is sometimes used to help treat a drug overdose or a poisoning.

When you take activated charcoal, drugs and toxins can bind to it. This helps rid the body of unwanted substances.

People take activated charcoal to manage a poisoning or overdose.

When used along with other treatments, activated charcoal may be effective for an acute poisoning. But it is not useful in some cases, including poisoning from:

  • Cyanide
  • Lithium
  • Alcohol
  • Iron tablets”

While serious situations need to be addressed by a doctor or local ER, activated charcoal is also considered helpful in situations that can often be managed at home – mild cases of food poisoning or a stomach bug, for example.

In Prescription for Natural Cures: A Self-Care Guide For Treating Health Problems With Natural Remedies, which was written James F. Balch, M.D., Mark Stengler N.M.D, and Robin Young Balch, N.M.D, activated charcoal is recommended for food poisoning. Here’s what they suggest:

Take 3 capsules every two hours for three doses. Activated charcoal doses taken internally can help to absorb toxins from food poisoning. Charcoal works best when taken in the first stages of food poisoning (when you first realize you have food poisoning).”

I’ve also found activated charcoal to be extremely helpful for stomach bugs. Activated charcoal is used in many water filters to remove bacteria and viruses, so it makes sense that it supports the body in flushing out what’s not supposed to be there. Interestingly, this study found that activated charcoal bound more strongly to e. coli than the normal (beneficial) bacteria found in the digestive tract.

2. Calms Itchy Bug Bites

It’s not the most discreet way to calm an itchy bug bite – a clear bug bite balm might be better if that’s an issue – but activated charcoal is a great option stings and bites. Just mix with a little water and dab on the area.

3. Soothes Digestive Discomfort (Gas, Bloating, Diarrhea)

“Activated charcoal is used to reduce digestive flatulence and also to absorb harmful toxins, including infectious agents that cause diarrhea,” write James F. Balch, M.D., Mark Stengler N.M.D, and Robin Young Balch, N.M.D. (source)

Many people say it helps immensely with bloating as well. Studies which have examined this issue are mixed, which isn’t all that surprising. We know from research on SIBO (small intestine bacterial overgrowth) that there are two types of microorganisms that typically cause bloating – ones that produce hydrogen and ones that produce methane. They don’t usually respond to the same interventions, so it makes sense that activated charcoal might help in some cases but not others.

For this purpose, James F. Balch, M.D., Mark Stengler N.M.D, and Robin Young Balch, N.M.D. recommend the following:

Take it with a glass of water, two hours away from other medications and supplements.

Dosage: Take 500-1,000 mg three times daily for up to three days.” (source)

4. Whitens Teeth Naturally

Activated charcoal binds strongly with tannins and other compounds that stain teeth, and is traditionally used in Tanzania to clean teeth. (Sarita et al.) Here’s how to whiten teeth naturally with activated charcoal. Or if you don’t have charcoal, turmeric whitens teeth, too!

5. Non-Toxic Face Paint

I developed a recipe for non-toxic face paint after the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics reported that 10 out of 10 face paints they tested were positive for lead and 6 out of 10 tested positive for other toxic heavy metals (source 1source 2). It’s super easy to make!

6. Face Mask

For deep pore cleansing, mix 1-2 capsules with enough water to make it spreadable and apply to the face area for about 10 minutes before rinsing. Follow with a moisturizer like this rosehip seed oil or my homemade hydrating skin repair serum recipe.

7. Armpit Deodorizer

Activated charcoal is fabulous at absorbing odors, which is one reason it’s used in air filters and even in certain wound care situations where odor becomes an issue. (recipe for non-toxic face paint) It’s sometimes incorporated into natural deodorants like this one, but I haven’t tried it personally since I love my homemade deodorant recipe.

However, I do know that for some people who find that natural deodorants don’t quite cut it, adding a charcoal armpit mask to the routine as needed can be really helpful. Just dump 4-5 capsules into a small bowl, mix with water until you reach a spreadable consistency, apply and let sit for 5 minutes, then rinse.

8. Water Filtration

You can’t use activated charcoal capsules for this one, but it’s still worth mentioning. Although I don’t love that they’re plastic, I keep a couple of portable water bottles like these on hand because they have built in activated charcoal filters. They’re my “go to” when we travel and don’t have access to the lovely spring water we have at home.

Does activated charcoal prevent hangovers?

Human studies have shown that taking activated charcoal with alcohol does not reduce alcohol absorption. (Minocha et al., Hulten et al.) However, I’ve found that taking it after sipping a glass of wine at a social gathering prevents me from feeling icky the next morning. My guess is that it helps by soaking up certain additives I’m sensitive to – there are currently 200 different approved additives in the United States. (source)

Interestingly, I’ve found that when I drink Dry Farm Wines, which are grown with organic practices and don’t contain added sulfites or other ingredients that are commonly used (like sawdust and food coloring), I don’t have the issues I do with most wines.

Important note:

Because activated charcoal binds with a lot of substances, including many medications and vitamins,  it’s best not take it within two hours of any supplements or medicines. (source)

Where to buy activated charcoal

I buy this brand because it’s made from coconut shells, which is more porous (meaning it adsorbs better) than hardwood derived activated charcoal, and is also considered environmentally friendly.

Although it’s not much to look at, Chaga, or the “King of Medicinal Mushrooms” as some like to call it, is a very special medicinal mushroom that is gaining popularity in the west for its health benefits and appealing taste in the form of chaga tea.

These benefits have long been known in the East, where Chaga has been used for centuries by people in Siberia, Russia and other parts of Asia.

The main goal of our company is to give people pleasure and health through Chaga Mushroom. In order to do this, we specialize in top quality natural products. We are supplying elite Chaga tea and our experts regularly analyze the aroma and taste of each cup of chaga tea, so that each Chaga tea will be in compliance with our company’s demands. We believe that the organic product is a natural product grown on clean ground and processed without the use of chemical agents. We are paying great importance to the circumstances in which Chaga is transported, stored and implemented in order to maximize the preservation of its unique flavor, taste and beneficial properties.

Probably each of us has heard about the healing miracles of Chaga Mushroom. Chaga is an outgrowth on the birch tree. This type of mushroom is quite rare and it takes 4 to 6 years to grow on the birch tree. But we must not confuse it with tinder fungus, which also grows on birch trees, but the latter have no therapeutic action. It is not so simple to find chaga. It is necessary to gather it when it is black and covered with cracks. Its favorite places on the tree are knots, broken branches and areas with damaged bark. Most often it grows on quite old trees. Chaga itself consists of three layers: the top layer is dark, rough and cracked. The next layer is dark-brown, it is quite dark. And the bottom layer has brown-reddish color. On the soles of chaga that is in contact with the birch, there is no spongy layer, which is typical for tinder fungus. Drinks from chaga are pleasant to the taste and very healthy.

Certain foods can make your child’s ADHD symptoms worse. Here’s what you need to know to create a better ADHD diet.

Avoid Candy on a Diet for ADHD

jars of candy which should be avoided for children with ADHD
Jeff Wasserman/StocksyCandy is loaded with sugar and artificial colors, a bad combination for children with ADHD. Both of these common ingredients have been shown to promote ADHD symptoms — namely hyperactivity — in studies. “With the high content of sugar and artificial coloring, candy is a huge contributor to ADHD,” said Howard Peiper, a naturopath and the author of The ADD and ADHD Diet!

Sodas, Caffeine, and High-Fructose Corn Syrup Cause ADHD Symptoms

a glass of soda which should be avoided by children with ADHD
\ThinkstockIf you have ADHD, consider eliminating soda. (Even if you don’t have ADHD, saying no to soda is a good idea.) These drinks often have many of the same sugars and sweeteners that make candy a bad idea for kids on the ADHD diet. And soda has other ingredients that worsen ADHD symptoms, such as high-fructose corn syrup and caffeine. “Excessive sugar and caffeine intake both cause symptoms of hyperactivity and easy distractibility,” says Dr. Barnhill. One 2013 study found that 5-year-old children who drank sodas were more likely to show aggression and social withdrawal.

Frozen Fruits and Vegetables May Exacerbate ADHD Symptoms

Jonelle Weaver/Getty ImagesAlthough fruits and vegetables are healthy choices for an ADHD diet, some frozen brands contain artificial colors, so check all labels carefully. Barnhill says some frozen foods can exacerbate ADHD symptoms for another reason: “Foods treated with organophosphates for insect control have been shown to cause neurologic-based behavioral problems that mimic ADHD and many other behavior problems.”

Nix Cake Mixes and Frostings on a Diet for ADHD

ShutterstockCake mix and frosting contain the high amounts of sugar and artificial colors that can lead to hyperactivity and other ADHD symptoms. Naheed Ali, MD, PhD, an expert on ADHD and the author of Diabetes and You: A Comprehensive, Holistic Approach, added that these products are often also loaded with several artificial sweeteners. “When frosting and cake mix contain artificial sweeteners, they increase the risk of ADHD symptoms more than natural sweeteners would,” he says.

Energy Drinks Can Worsen ADHD Symptoms in Teens

energy drinks, which can worsen ADHD symptoms
ThinkstockEnergy drinksare becoming increasingly popular among kids, especially teens. Unfortunately, they also have a veritable treasure trove of ingredients that can worsen ADHD symptoms: sugar, artificial sweeteners, artificial colors, caffeine, and other stimulants. “Energy drinks are high on the list of things that cause teens to display behaviors mimicking ADHD,” says Barnhill. They have no place in a healthy ADHD diet.

Ask an ADHD Dietitian About Eating Fish and Other Seafood

fish, which can potentially increase ADHD symptoms
ThinkstockDr. Ali says that eating fish and other seafood with trace amounts of mercury can exacerbate ADHD symptoms in the long term. Some of the worst culprits are shark, king mackerel, swordfish, and tilefish. “Mercury, like cellulose, is extremely hard to digest and can accumulate in the brain over time,” explains Ali. “This can lead to hyperactivity.” Talk to your doctor or ADHD nutritionist about the best types of fish to include in an ADHD diet.

ADHD Symptoms May Be Caused by Food Sensitivities

chocolate, which can cause a food sensitivity
ShutterstockMany children with food sensitivities can exhibit ADHD symptoms after they are exposed to certain foods. Some of the common foods that can cause ADHD reactions include milk, chocolate, soy, wheat, eggs, beans, corn, tomatoes, grapes, and oranges. If you suspect a food sensitivity may be contributing to your child’s ADHD symptoms, talk to your ADHD dietitian or doctor about trying an elimination diet.

Turmeric can reduce pain, joint swelling, and stiffness and improve function in those osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Curcumin in turmeric has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that inhibit inflammatory pathways in the body, lower oxidative stress, prevent cartilage damage, and aid cartilage regeneration.

You may know turmeric as an oriental spice that gives Asian food color and flavor, but did you know it has an illustrious history of use in traditional medicine as a remedy for everything from wounds and acne to bronchitis and arthritis? The basis for these uses lies in turmeric’s anti-inflammatory properties, mostly attributed to a chemical called curcumin.

Arthritis is an umbrella term for disorders of the joints. Of the nearly 100 types of arthritis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout are the most common. While the symptoms for all three are pain and stiffness, the causes are different. While osteoarthritis is caused by an age-related wear and tear of the cartilage in the joints, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition. Gout or gouty arthritis is caused by the accumulation of urate crystals in the joints due to high levels of uric acid in the body. Research shows that it’s beneficial to use turmeric for arthritis since this herb sometimes works as efficiently as standard drugs.1

1. Reduces Joint Pain And Swelling

Curcumin in turmeric is known to possess potent anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. In a pilot clinical study on patients of rheumatoid arthritis, patients were either given 500 mg curcumin, or 50 mg diclofenac sodium, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, or a combination of the two. The patients in the curcumin group showed the maximum improvement in terms of number of swollen joints, levels of inflammation markers in the blood, pain, and function.2

Another study on people with osteoarthritis saw a face-off between turmeric and ibuprofen. Those who took a 2 gm dose of turmeric every day reported lower pain levels while climbing stairs than those who took the ibuprofen. The pain level while walking improved as did knee function.3

2. Suppresses Inflammation

Inflammation is the root cause of the pain experienced in all forms of arthritis. Many studies have proved that curcumin can activate the antioxidant defense system within the cell and lead to the release of antioxidants and proteins that protect the cell and help in detoxification. It also helps suppress the production as well as action of pro-inflammatory cytokines (proteins), enzymes, and other inflammatory mediators. By thwarting their activity, turmeric can ease inflammation.4 5 This anti-inflammatory property of turmeric helps in preventing diverse inflammatory conditions from oestoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis to diabetes and even cancer.

Curcumin also blocks the function of free radical-generating enzymes like COX, LOX, xanthine dehydrogenase, and iNOS. Another inflammatory cytokine involved in rheumatoid arthritis is interleukin-12 (IL-12), and turmeric has been found to inhibit IL-12 and thus help in autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and myocarditis.6 7

3. Prevents Cartilage Degradation And Protects Cartilage

Another big benefit of turmeric? The curcumin in it has a protective effect on the body’s cartilage. The wearing down of the cartilage is central to the progression of osteoarthritis. By preventing joint cartilage degeneration, curcumin can help ease symptoms and may even slow down the worsening of your condition.

Curcumin is also said to reduce cartilage inflammation – a problem experienced in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis – and boost the activity of chondrocytes that are responsible for creating and maintaining the cartilage matrix.8 Treatment with curcumin may, therefore, help regenerate cartilage by creating the right environment.9

4. Can Prevent And Fight Gout

Turmeric can bring down high levels of uric acid, which causes a painful condition called gout. Curcumin lowers uric acid levels by inhibiting the enzyme xanthine oxidase which catalyzes the transformation of xanthine into uric acid.10 In one study with patients of non-alocholic fatty liver disorder, curcumin could bring down the levels of uric acid as well as the harmful LDL cholesterol.11 In another study, researchers also looked at the effect of a purified curcumin extract on symptoms of gout and found that 17 out of 19 patients noticed improvement within 48 hours. In the same study, 41 out of 62 patients of fibromyalgia also showed improvement.12

5. Fights Oxidative Stress Associated With Arthritis

Oxidative stress has a role to play in the way your osteoarthritis plays out and progresses. Which is why antioxidant supplements are being explored as potential alternatives or as additional therapy for managing conditions like knee osteoarthritis. Of the variety of antioxidant supplements on the market, curcumin has shown a significant effect on function and pain relief.13

One piece of research studied the effect of turmeric in countering the effects of oxidative stress on people with mild to moderate osteoarthritis. The subjects took 1500 mg of curcuminoid capsules a day, along with piperine to improve the bioavailability of the turmeric compounds in the body. After 6 weeks, it was found that systemic oxidative stress had eased. The researchers were able to confirm that the antioxidant effect of the natural remedy may help relieve osteoarthritis symptoms.14

6. Works As Adjuvant Therapy With Other Anti-Arthritic Treatments

While the benefits of turmeric on its own are reason enough to give this remedy a closer look, some evidence also suggests it could improve quality of life and provide better pain relief for patients on other medication. In one instance, patients who were already taking 75 mg of diclofenac sodium to manage their knee osteoarthritis were given 1000 mg of curcuminoids daily along with their regular medication. And while there was no statistically significant difference overall, the group that took the curcuminoids tended to have better results on function in daily living as well as pain.15 So even if you do not go all out with turmeric, you could try it alongside your other treatments to manage arthritis.

How Much Turmeric To Have

If you have osteoarthritis, limit intake in capsule form to no more than 400 to 600 mg thrice daily. Alternatively, if you’re using the powdered root in herbal remedies or cooking, be sure to have not more than 3 gm a day. A typical amount would be 0.5 to 1 gm, on average. If you have rheumatoid arthritis, a 500 mg dose taken twice a day will suffice. However, these are just indicative numbers from the Arthritis Foundation.16 You should consult a trained medical practitioner or naturopath for your individual case. Whatever the amount you consume, always buy the powder, root, or medication from a credible source. Be wary of unverified online sites where the purity of the product may be questionable.

Incorporate turmeric tea into your daily routine to protect against inflammation. Simply steep the root in warm water or boil the powder with water and sweeten with honey. You could also try a “golden milk” using a similar method but with milk or nondairy milk. Alternatively, add some to your meals. It blends seamlessly into soups and stews and even smoothies. Turmeric can also be paired with other anti-inflammatory foods like ginger or black pepper.

Turmeric Side Effects To Watch Out For

If you decide to try turmeric to treat or prevent arthritis, here is what you should know about adverse effects. Having very high quantities of it – medicinal doses as opposed to dietary amounts – can have some unpleasant side effects. The spice is a blood thinner – this can be a problem if you are already taking a blood thinner, and risky if you are pregnant, have gallbladder disease, or are scheduled to have surgery soon. Hypoglycemia is another possible risk for those who are diabetic and already on medication for lowering blood sugar. For others, a milder side effect and a sign that you’re having too much is a stomach upset. Some tend to develop ulcers as well, so make sure the herb agrees with you.17

While it is true, turmeric is an extremely popular spice with powerful medicinal and culinary properties. It has been commonly used in Chinese and Indian medicine for centuries. honey with turmeric: the most powerful antibiotic in the world that even doctors have not been able to explain. This spice with a characteristic flavor and color has been used in the treatment of respiratory problems, liver diseases, skin conditions, cuts, wounds, sprains in the muscles and gastric problems. Numerous studies have shown that turmeric is extremely useful in the case of infections, digestion problems, inflammation and even cancer, also as a powerful antibiotic. Its active ingredient, curcumin, is responsible for most of its health benefits, as it provides antioxidants, treats microbes, relieves inflammation and many others. Due to its ability to destroy microbes, turmeric treats gastritis, digestive tract problems, peptic and gastric ulcers and Helicobacter pylori. researchers have discovered that curcumin has a positive effect on the molecules of inflammation, cell survival and DNA. It positively affects the membranes in human cells. Positively alters 700 genes and 160 physiological problems. Due to the powerful anti-inflammatory properties, curcumin also relieves the pain of osteoarthritis. To relieve this pain and improve mobility, take 200 mg of turmeric daily. Experts also reveal that this spice treats heart and lung problems, liver problems, metabolic problems, neurological problems, inflammatory problems and autoimmune disorders, as well as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, a recent study in animals has found that turmeric contains turmerone, a bioactive element that increases brain function, repairs brain cells and, therefore, treats Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, its healthy properties inhibit beta-amyloid, which created plaque and therefore interferes with this disease. Studies also indicate that curcumin, due to its strong antioxidant, anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties, effectively treats all types of cancer, including cancers of the lung, colon, liver, breast, intestine and stomach. According to Dr. William Lavalley, famous natural doctor, this ingredient affects cancer cells due to the routes of molecules when it enters the cells, destroying cancer cells and leaving healthy cells intact, which is not the case with chemotherapy. In addition, turmeric mixed with raw honey provides, even more, health benefits. This combination helps digestion, fights bacteria and viruses and increases the amount of good bacteria in the intestines. the following recipe brings together all these health benefits of these natural ingredients and represents the best natural antibiotic , for enhanced absorbtion of curcumin, add half a spoon of black pepper. Instructions: In a glass jar, just mix the ingredients well and store it in a cool environment. Use: If you have a cold or flu, take half a spoonful of this remedy 3 times a day and when you have been cured of your flu then reduce it to just once every day. You must melt the mixture in your mouth and do not swallow it immediately. You can also drink it in your cup of tea or milk. The avocado is believed to have originated in Puebla, Mexico. The oldest evidence of the avocado was found in a cave in Puebla, Mexico and dates back to around 10,000 BC.

Native to Mexico and Central America, the avocado is classified in the same family as camphor and cinnamon. An avocado is botanically, a large berry that grows on a tree that can be kept at 6 feet tall when pruned, or reach 20 to 40 feet if planted outdoors. Just like a banana, the avocado ripens 1-2 weeks after being picked.

Avocados are often referred to as the healthiest food due to its impressive nutritional value.

An avocado contains these vitamins and minerals:
Vitamin B1
Vitamin B2
Vitamin B3
Vitamin B5
Vitamin B6
Vitamin B9
Vitamin C
Vitamin E
Vitamin K
Calcium
Iron
Magnesium
Manganese
Phosphorus
Sodium
Zinc

•An avocado contains more potassium than a banana. Avocados have 14% and a banana contains 10% potassium.

•Folate for your heart’s health. Avocados have 23% folate which lowers incidences of heart disease. Vitamin E, monounsaturated fats and glutathione are also good for the heart. Folate can lower the risks of having a stroke.

•Folate is also essential in the prevention of birth defects such as spinal bifida and neural tube defect.

•Eating avocados help our body’s absorb 5 times the amount of carotenoids (lycopene and beta carotene).

•Eye Heath- Avocados contain more carotenoid lutein than any other fruit, protecting against macular degeneration and cataracts.

•High in beta-sitosterol, avocados lower bad cholesterol by 22%, raises good cholesterol by 11% and also lowers blood triglycerides by 20%.

•Studies show high oleic acid prevents breast cancer, inhibits tumor growth in prostate cancer, seeks out precancerous and oral cancer cells and destroys them.

•Avocados are high in fiber and will help you feel fuller longer, potentially helping with weight loss. High fiber helps metabolic health and steadies blood sugar.

•Avocado extract paired with a carrier oil can reduce the symptoms of arthritis.

•Pholyphenols and flavonoids within avocados have anti inflammatory properties.

•Avocados cleanse the intestines, relieving bad breath.

•Avocado oil greatly nourishes the skin and is a beneficial treatment for psoriasis and other skin irritations.

•Avocados contain an antioxidant called glutathione that prevents heart disease, cancer and slows the signs of aging.

•Glutathione also fights free radicals.

Our blood and cells carry oxygen all throughout our bodies. When we are exposed to environmental pollutants, these toxins change the oxygen in our mitochondria into free radicals, destroying our cells and DNA. This damage creates chronic illnesses.

Researchers from the Federation of American Society for Experimental Biology have found glutathione in avocados can be absorbed into our mitochondria and then neutralize the free radicals.

Most cancer is caused by processed food and toxic ingredients, new study confirms

The researchers found out that 40.8 percent of cancer cases can be attributed to the above-mentioned 24 factors. “Tobacco smoking was responsible for the greatest cancer burden, accounting for an estimated 15.7 percent of all incident cancer cases (2,485 cases), followed by physical inactivity and excess body weight, which were responsible for an estimated 7.2 percent and 4.3 percent of incident cancer cases, respectively.”

(Natural News) A recently published study out of Canada showed that the total amount of cancer rates that can be linked to lifestyle and environmental factors is substantial, at almost 41 percent.

The other factors were responsible for less than four percent of incident cancer cases each. The researchers concluded that combined with exercise and the conscious effort to avoid the environmental factors of incurring cancer, the disease is preventable. (Related: Researchers find ‘interactions’ between cancer cells and their environment.)

The power of the elements: Discover Colloidal Silver Mouthwash with quality, natural ingredients like Sangre de Drago sap, black walnut hulls, menthol crystals and more. Zero artificial sweeteners, colors or alcohol. Learn more at the Health Ranger Store and help support this news site.

Also embedded in the study is the added knowledge that a big part of what is considered as a bad diet is the inclusion of too many sugars, which is common in today’s society. Nowadays, 80 percent of all packaged products contain some form of fructose.

Too much fat intake is also not good for the body. As a matter of fact, a July 2017 study that was published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology showed that saturated fat intake is related to a risk of lung cancer in smokers and those who have quit smoking for the past 10 years. Charred and barbecued meats, on the other hand, can increase the risks of pancreatic and breast cancers.

But what takes the cake are processed foods. According to Hong Kong dietitian Sally Shi-Po Poon, “processed foods” can be said to represent any food that has been altered from its natural state in some way, for convenience’s sake.

Common processed foods include breakfast cereals, canned and frozen vegetables, bread, pasta, savory snacks such as crisps and biscuits, microwave or read-to-eat meals, bread, oils, processed meats such as luncheon meat and jerky, and drinks such as coffee, juice, and milk.

However, not all processed foods are unhealthy, Poon said. For instance, milk needs to be pasteurized, therefore altered from its natural state, in order to remove harmful bacteria from its constitution.

For his part, Health Designer founder and senior dietitian Vin Ip said some processed foods are not detrimental to your health, noting, “Minimally processed foods are almost identical to unprocessed foods and are therefore acceptable to include in our diet.”

What must be avoided at all costs are heavily-processed foods, for instance, deli meats like bacon, salami, and sausages, for they are high in salt, nitrites, and nitrates and are likely to cause cancer. “Eating 50 grams of processed meat every day increases one’s risk of colorectal cancer by 18 percent. That’s the equivalent of about four strips of bacon or one hot dog,” Poon said.

Yes, it is true. The fewer calories you consume, the healthier you are and the longer you will live. Calorie Reduction (CR) is the most strategic approach to health and longevity there is. I feel vibrant, twenty years younger, my mind is crystal clear and I sleep a full eight hours every night.

Observe the “Blue Zones” (Sardinia, Italy, Okinawa, Japan, Loma Linda, California, Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica, Ikaria, Greece), these people thrive into their 90’s and 100’s… They all have one strong attribute – they do not consume a lot of food. Yes, of course, they walk a lot, passionate about their work, they have a strong family bond, they participate in community activities, they grow their own food and don’t watch CNN or have Donald Trump as their president…. They eat mostly vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains, seeds, and nuts.

In the five “Blue Zones” the people live longer than anywhere else in the world… All of these people who live into their 90’s and 100’s eat a mostly a vegan diet of beans, grains, seeds, nuts, fruits, and vegetables… They do not over exercise, they walk and do their own chores, they are passionate about something whether it is painting, writing or playing an instrument, they have faith whether it is of God, mankind or the sun, they have something to look forward to every day, they surround themselves with family and friends and they don’t worry about stuff.. They don’t have smartphones or are they on Facebook for hours at a timer and they certainly do not watch cable television… They are plugged into life…

I have been on a CR lifestyle diet for a few months. I have cut all my portions by two thirds. I have noticed that I am not hungry, my stomach seems to have shrunk, I only consume food when I am really hungry and I eat very slowly and chew my food longer than normal. I choose my food very carefully. I only eat food that is highly nutritional, fresh locally grown and has a lot of fiber and tons of nutrients.

This morning, for example, I had one large Stokes purple sweet potato and two cups of chickpea miso with lemon. For lunch, I will have a half of a butternut squash. For dinner, I always eat before 4:00, I will have a half cup of lentils mixed with quinoa, amaranth, and millet… In between meals I drink a lot of gunpowder tea, Kukicha tea and a blend of herbal tea I make with dry, wild or organic Red Clover blossoms; dry, wild or organic, dry sifted Alfalfa, Stinging Nettle leaf; dry wild or organic Yarrow flowers. Tea has no calories, tons of antioxidants and vitamins and is very filling…

Now, if I find myself nervously hungry, I eat raw carrots, celery, radishes, cauliflower, and an apple… These foods are not only extremely healthy, but they are also loaded with fiber, nutrients, and antioxidants. These are called guiltless foods.

Socially, I do not have a problem. Everyone knows that I am vegan and do not like to be fussed over. When I go to dinner with people I am famous for ordering a plate of parsley or raw spinach with lemon. I never drink alcohol, probably the worst thing you can bombard your liver with… I also never use oils. Oils are pure fat and highly processed. Fat is important as is oils, but consume oil in the most natural state. Eat olives, nuts, avocados, chia and hemp seeds and make sure to put flaxseeds on all of your food – loaded with Omega-rich nutrients.

It is important to eat your largest meal in the morning followed later in the afternoon by a smaller meal… Eat nothing after 4:00 p.m. The American diet is three humungous meals loaded with fat, sugar, dairy4, and meat. The largest meal consumed by Americans is late at night. Most people literally pass out after eating a huge meal of meat and potatoes drenched in butter and cream along with beer and wine. You can imagine what that does to your heart and liver. It is no surprise that Americans develop more heart disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity than all the rest of the industrial modern countries combined…

80% of all Americans adults and 1/3rd of all American children are clinically obese. Obesity is the number one link to all major human diseases and an early death. Go to the supermarkets and just observe the foods people loaded the carts with – boxes of sugary cereals, cans of processed soups and boxes of frozen pizzas and dinners. The government should give tax breaks to those people that eat a clean plant-based diet and tax people heavily for eating processed foods, meat, and dairy. Why should people like you and me be burdened with high healthcare for people that do not take care of themselves?

There are other factors to the longevity equation. Exercise is vital. But do not knock yourself out or think of exercise as a chore. Incorporate moving your body with activities you love to do like cycling, walking, yoga, basketball, gardening, and tennis. Mediation is a powerful tool to increase mental awareness, reduce stress, encourage a healthy body, slows aging and benefits cardiovascular and immune health… You don’t have to be a Hindu Guru to mediate. I meditate when I walk, take a sauna, lay in my bed and focus on the night and the morning. I also paint and find myself engrossed in my art.

Another extremely important part of the equation of longevity is to surround yourself with happiness and peace. Sever relationships that drag you down no matter who the people are. Find a job that you are excited about and look forward to engaging in. Rid your home of clutter, keep your home simple and live a minimalist lifestyle. I have a very good friend that is Hindu and Jitendra only has three pairs of pants, three shirts and one pair of shoes. I asked him why he doesn’t have more clothes? He told me that he only wears one pair of pants and a shirt and one pair of shoes at a time… That made so much sense to me. I immediately reduced the closets of clothes that I had, many still had their price tags and many I haven’t worn for years. I also got rid of a lot of furniture, everything in the garage and the cupboards in my kitchen that I never use.

Severing relationships, giving away a lot of my possessions, reducing my wardrobe and the furniture in my home was the most powerful emotional revelation I ever experienced. Reducing my diet to a bare minimum amount of food allows me to focus on my passions in life rather than to be the gatekeeper of too many clothes, furniture, and stuff.

I attest to never feeling tired, always having tons of energy, my mind has more clarity than any time in my life, I feel younger, happier and freer than at any time in my life. I also spend as little as $20 a week on food. I am not all the way there yet, trust me.

A while ago I met a man with just a backpack, nothing else. he traveled around the world and stayed at youth hostels… After I got to know him, I found out that he was quite wealthy. I asked him about all his homes, cars and lifestyle. He told me that he felt like a prisoner, all of those material things were like a weight around his neck. He told me that he gave away all the money to charity. He didn’t want to burden his kids with the same strain and stress that inflicted him. He also wanted his children to experience the joy of success and achieving their own journey rather than his… He loved to be among the people and avoided 5-star hotels like the plague…

Pablo Picasso said, “I’d like to live as a poor man with lots of money.”

The best diet you can possibly eat is a poor man’s diet – You will live healthy for decades… This is my favorite meal – sweet potato, black beans, brown rice, and an avocado… No salt or oil or seasoning, just simply the healthiest most wonderful tasting combination of food on the planet… The cost is under $5

Life is a journey of sharing, experiencing and enjoying other people. Learning from people of different cultures is this most valuable opportunity we have in life. Life is a gift, just unwrap it carefully….

Thank you so much for your input Doug

It’s called “the mushroom of immortality” and not just because it’s been used medicinally for over 4000 years.

So where can I get this unique, ancient mushroom? How do I use it exactly? How much should I take a day? What are the benefits? Can it really make me immortal?

As much as I’d like to believe it, unfortunately that’s a no on the last question. However, it does have anti aging properties, as well as numerous other incredible benefits that you won’t want to miss out on.

So without further ado, let’s dissect this mushroom and see what it’s got to offer!

What Are Reishi Mushrooms?

The reishi mushroom is a fungal growth with a fan-like shape and a toasted orange, red and brown color. When in the wild, it grows in humid areas on dead or dying hardwood trees. Although it can be found in Asia, Europe, Australia and North and South America, it’s actually a rare mushroom to come across. Even in ancient times it was reserved only for royalty. Luckily reishi mushrooms can be cultivated, which gives us much easier access to its amazing qualities!

It is a common Chinese belief that all mushrooms are nourishing to the spirit. The Chinese names for “reishi” even translate to “spirit mushroom,” “divine mushroom” and as mentioned before, “mushroom of immortality.” It’s no surprise then that the first known uses of reishi are in China. And in addition to being used for “immortality” throughout Chinese history, it was also commonly used for insomnia, cough, fatigue and asthma.

The taste of a reishi mushroom is definitely bitter. Some describe it as pleasantly bitter or earthy while others say it tastes like tree bark. Regardless of how you choose to describe it, reishi mushrooms aren’t famous for their taste.

Why Is Reishi Mushroom Good For You?

You would think that a bitter, tree bark flavored fungus discovered in ancient times would have long been tossed out of the medicine cupboard. If this fungus isn’t delicious, why have people been using it for over 4000 years?

Mushrooms rise to the top of the most beneficial superfoods. And the most researched and praised of all superfood mushrooms is the reishi.

How To Use Reishi Mushrooms

There are many ways to prepare reishi mushrooms. After all, we have had 4000 years of practice. No matter your preferred method, any way you do it will still give you a large amount of reishi benefits.

Fresh Reishi Mushroom

Finding fresh reishi mushrooms at a store can be difficult. You will have the most luck in organic health food stores and markets. If you are able to cultivate it or live near a forest of hemlock trees that is also ideal!

The benefit of using fresh reishi mushrooms is that they are softer when in this form and can be more easily cut, chopped, grated, or ground. However, the only edible part is the outermost white edge, which when cooked is only about as soft as chicken. The rest of the reishi can be boiled to make a tea. Most often it is sliced to dry out and use later.

How To Cook Reishi Mushrooms

If you are wanting to try a fresh reishi mushroom, get a whole reishi and slice off the white outer edge. It’s important that the mushroom is very fresh, because as soon as it hardens you will hardly be able to slice and chew through it.

Once you have your white slices, put them in a pan on medium heat. You can cook them with olive oil, salt, pepper and/or garlic. Let them cook until lightly browned. Enjoy!

How To Grow Reishi Mushrooms Outdoors

If you want easier access to reishi mushrooms and all their glory, you’ll be happy to find that you can grow them right in your own back yard! The process takes time, but it’s very simple.

Supplies Needed:

  • A 3 foot log, about 6 inches in diameter (oak and maple are best) with the bark still intact
  • Reishi dowels/plugs (can be purchased online)
  • Drill with a 5/16th bit
  • Hammer
  • Wax (beeswax, soy wax, or cheese wax)
  • Paintbrush

Instructions:

Take your log (freshly cut is best) and drill holes about 5 inches apart over the entire log, the same depth as your dowels (usually about an inch long). Once the holes are drilled, gently hammer the dowels into the openings so they are completely flush with the log.

Use the paintbrush to seal the holes with wax, which will keep bugs and other competing predetors from entering the log. Once the log is sealed, place it upright in a year-round shady area. You can lean it up against a wall or fence if needed.

Wait 6 to 8 months for the reishi to colonize in the log. It’s important to keep the log moist at all times. Depending on the weather and humidity of the area, you may need to spay the log 3 to 5 times a week, or only a couple times during the hot summer months. After the log has been colonized and the reishi start growing, the log will produce reishi annually for the next 4 to 5 years.

How To Dry Reishi Mushrooms

Because reishi mushrooms are too tough to eat when fresh, it is most effective to slice them into strips soon after harvest and then dry them for later use. You can also dry them whole, but they are a lot more difficult to work with in this form. Thin strips are much easier to break or grind.

  • Dashboard Drying. The easiest way to solar dry reishi mushrooms is to lay the strips out on a pan or towel and set them on the dashboard of your car. It’s a great place for the mushrooms to get the full power of the sun through closed windows that keep bugs away.
  • Herb Drying. Reishi can also be dried like herbs by hanging them on a string and positioning them in the sun. Make sure to give them ventilation as well.
  • Box Drying. Another great way to dry reishi is to place them in a ventilated box and set them in the sunlight. A black colored box is best to attract more heat from the sun.

Reishi Mushroom Tea

The most popular way to consume reishi is in a tea. You can purchase reishi tea online and in organic or health food stores, but you’ll see it’s just as easy to buy (or harvest!) reishi strips and make some yourself. Just break up 2 or 3 reishi slices into small pieces, thow them in a quart of boiling water for 20 minutes and you’re done!

Making reishi tea is an easy way to get the benefits of this amazing mushroom. The best part is it that you can make a large batch and then bottle it up, refrigerate and drink it cold!

Again, it may not be the best tasting tea in town, but the benefits are tremendous. So even if you have to gulp it down quickly, IT IS WORTH IT!

Reishi Mushroom Extract/Tincture

Reishi can also be taken as an extract or tincture, to really squeeze every drop of nutrients and medicinal properties from it. Reishi extract can also be purchased, but here is how you can make it yourself!

Start by filling a mason jar with broken strips or ground reishi. Pour 2-3 cups of whisky or vodka into the jar and set it somewhere out of the way for a couple weeks. During this setting time be sure to take it out once a day to shake.

After 2 weeks, strain the tincture and set the alcohol aside. Add the remaining reishi to a quart of boiling water and let the water evaporate until you have 1 or 2 cups left in the pot. Strain the mixture. At this point you have extracted all you can from the reishi and you can throw it away or compost it. Add the reishi water to the reishi alcohol and shake it up to make your tincture.

You can take your reishi tincture daily with a dropper or you can add it to water to drink it down that way.

Reishi Mushroom Powder

Another way to prepare your reishi mushroom is to make a powder. If you are wanting to grind it yourself, make sure you have a strong blender or grinder because reishi is extremely tough when dry. The best way to grind it would be to take thin, dried strips and break them into smaller pieces first. Or you could just use Organifi Red Juice; reishi is one of the 11 superfood ingredients!

Reishi powder is great to have around because it has more surface area to extract all the nutrients from. You can also use this powder to steep and make a tea, add it to your morning shakes, or cook it into a soup or stew.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How does reishi mushroom work?

A. A reishi mushroom’s purpose is to break down dead or dying trees into components that are more edible for bugs, plants and humans. It is basically decomposing the tree and taking the nutrients into itself, which we can then harvest and consume. It is the nutrients in the mushroom, taken from the tree, that are extremely beneficial to us and which we wouldn’t be able to consume any other way!

Q. How much reishi mushroom should I take?

A. As most medicinal foods, the daily dosage depends on what you are using it for. It is always best to see a doctor and find out just how much you should be taking personally. However, generally it is said that 1 gram of raw reishi mushroom a day is sufficient.

Q. What is the best way to take reishi mushroom?

A. There isn’t one way that’s better than the rest, so it really is up to preference. Some really enjoy the earthy and bitter taste of the tea, while others can’t take reishi unless it’s hidden in a soup or shake. When it comes to the reishi, you really can’t go wrong!

Almost Immortal

So, reishi mushrooms. They are a great help when it comes to energy, blood pressure, respiratory support, anti-aging and possibly even the prevention of cancer. The secret to immortality? Not quite. The Cannabis flower is a special one for many reasons. Not only for the relaxed, joyful, euphoric and creative sensations it brings, but for how it specifically expands our consciousness.

When the user (i.e. receiver) is tuned into the cannabis frequency, that is, tuned into the plant’s intention aligned with our own, awareness often grows into areas of the unknown which instantly changes our vibration.

The reason cannabis does this so well is due to its alliance with Gaia and the human template. It’s why THC, the primary psychoactive component in cannabis is so welcomed by the endocannabinoid system of the brain.

That system is innate to the cannabis plant. It’s familiar and this instantly harmonizes the frequency within our DNA field and the pineal. This means that cannabis can interact in a multi-dimensional framework within the human’s field and change its own consciousness in the process.

DEA ‘Chief Propagandist’ Says Agency Knows Cannabis is Safe, Keeps it Illegal for Profit

Psychoactive plants are particularly exceptional at changing their own awareness by using the human being as a conduit, but cannabis is one of the best hence its widespread use throughout the world.

This is how incredibly aligned it is with the human. But if the user doesn’t tune in, all that is experienced is a buzzing which travels though the head and body with nowhere to go.

Nature’s psychoactive components are designed to transition our current reality, and they do this while synchronizing perfectly with the human field to send the user down another path that is quite different from everyday life.

It can shift those seeking other levels of consciousness through portals to experience a different reality, one where common interactions are enhanced, especially since all senses must shift up.

Sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch, and extrasensory perception are all enhanced.

This makes food taste better, visuals appear more alive, heightened sexual experiences, and a nose that will track down your most desired scents. This is all completely dependent on the user’s intention to align with the cannabis frequency, one that requires permission to show you its beauty.

On the flip side, it can also allow other less pleasurable frequencies to internalize, hence paranoia. So it can both expand and contract consciousness depending on the user’s alignment and intention.

This is one reason why adults above 30 years of age (who are new to cannabis), can have very different experiences than those consuming it for the first time at a much younger age.

This relates to differences in the maturity of sexual energy, wisdom attained, intentions, relationships, and many other lifestyle factors that influence how the cannabis frequency is integrated within.

Getting high recreationally and expanding our awareness with cannabis in meditation can be two very different things. When the consciousness of the human being is in a state of expansion, cannabis brings a sense of wisdom that is unique because it delivers concepts through Gaia.

These concepts end up being intimately related to our lives, since nature reflects a part of itself onto every aspect of us, just as we do to nature.

It goes deeper than that. It can connect with not only our own lives, but other lives recorded on the planet through consciousness imprints while it gathers conceptual data.

This includes data from those present on the planet and those who have past. Meaning it can retrieve information relevant to concepts it seeks to illustrate from today or from thousands of years ago. All psychoactive plants can do this through their unique interface with our field.

Cannabis brings the underlying operating system to the surface.

Shamans have used it for thousands of years for this purpose, to bring mindfulness where there is none so that we can see the world through an upgraded landscape that connects people to something more beautiful than what they know. Many of the shamans of today, those all around us, are just starting to realize it.

So let us welcome what is now the full expression of cannabis, marijuana, weed, pot, ganja, etc, imprinting its consciousness on the world, embracing all the beauty it provides if we choose to tune in. Are we ready for new lessons?
